Public transport in Gothenburg and the pass
The Gothenburg Pass includes the sightseeing bus and sightseeing boats, but not a ticket for the trams and buses. This is the most commonly misunderstood point about the product.
Table of Contents
What's included and what isn't
This distinction causes the most confusion, so let's be clear about it right away:
Included in the pass are the hop-on hop-off bus and the hop-on hop-off boat. Both are sightseeing products: fixed loop routes that take in the sights, with commentary and a timetable built for sightseeing.
Not included is Västtrafik, meaning everything locals use to get around: the trams, the city buses, the local ferries across the Göta älv, and regional connections. For those you need a separate ticket, bought through the Västtrafik app.
When you don't need one
Gothenburg's tourist core is compact. From Stora Hamnkanalen past Feskekôrka and Domkyrkan to Haga and up to Skansen Kronan is an easy walk. Götaplatsen with the Gothenburg Museum of Art is also walkable via Kungsportsavenyn, if you don't mind the distance along the boulevard.
The hop-on hop-off bus also covers the main stops beyond that, and for a straightforward sightseeing loop it's often enough on its own.
When you need one
Once you leave the city centre, getting around without a ticket becomes awkward. The Universeum sits at Korsvägen, a bit beyond the walkable core, the Maritime Museum & Aquarium is over in Majorna to the west, and Aeroseum is out by Säve north of the river, well outside the centre. Bohus Fortress in Kungälv is likewise only reachable by public transport or by car.
In practice that means: if you're taking the pass for two or more days and want to fit in the outlying sights, budget for a Västtrafik day ticket alongside it. It is not a large amount, but it belongs in the calculation when you compare the pass against buying tickets individually.
The airport is a separate matter
The bus link from Landvetter Airport into the city isn't included in the pass, nor in the standard Västtrafik city ticket. It's sold separately. Anyone arriving by ferry from Kiel or Frederikshavn already lands in the middle of the city and usually needs nothing at all for that first stretch.
Both variants
No public transport, in either variant
Neither the All-Inclusive Pass nor the Essentials Pass includes a Västtrafik ticket.
Questions about public transport
Does the Gothenburg Pass work on the tram? +
No. Västtrafik's trams, city buses and local ferries aren't included. What is included is the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus, which follows a fixed loop route and is a different thing from a transport ticket.
Do I need a public transport ticket at all? +
Often not for the city centre: Haga, Feskekôrka, Domkyrkan, the Museum of Gothenburg and the canals are all within walking distance of each other. Once you want to get to the Universeum, the Maritime Museum & Aquarium in Majorna, or Aeroseum out of town, getting around without one gets awkward.
How do I get from the airport into the city? +
Not with the pass. The airport buses from Landvetter are a separate product and aren't included in either variant, and neither are the train connections.
Admission through the pass, transport separate
The pass pays off through the attractions, not through getting between them. You'll buy the public transport ticket separately.
